The Department of Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, established in October 2022, is formed by hydrological teachers of the Department of Groundwater Science and Engineering of the College of New Energy and Environment and other newly engaged teachers. There are 13 full-time teachers, including 5 professors, 6 associate professors and 1 lecturer. All in-service teachers have obtained doctoral degrees, and 3 of them have obtained overseas doctoral degrees.
In 2020, the program “Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering” of our department was selected as the first batch of national first-class undergraduate programs. It grows out of the program of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology of Changchun Institute of Geology founded in 1952, which was adjusted to the program of Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering in 1997. Setting sights on major needs of the country and industry’s development, this program follows the development trend of the discipline, takes geoscience as support, and stays committed to cultivating compound and top professionals in the field of water conservancy with a solid foundation in geoscience, extensive professional knowledge, strong practical ability, and superior comprehensive quality. More than 5,000 undergraduate students have graduated from this program so far, engaging in every part of the territorial resources and the water conservancy industry, and making important contributions to the progress of China’s water conservancy industry and national and local economic development.
Our master’s and doctoral programs for “Hydrology and Water Resources” used to fall into the category of Hydrology and Water Resources which dates back to Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology of Changchun Institute of Geology. The program of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology became China’s first batch of master’s programs in 1980 and a doctoral program in 1990. In 1997, it was adjusted to a master’s and doctoral program for hydrology and water resources. In 2002, it was selected as a key discipline of Jilin Province. In 2009, a postdoctoral mobile station for water conservancy engineering was set up. In 2010, a doctoral program for the discipline of water conservancy engineering was established. In 2011, the discipline was selected as a superior, distinctive, and key one of Jilin Province during the 12th Five-Year Plan period. In 2018, it was selected as a high-level category-B discipline of Jilin Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. Then, Jilin University carried out discipline adjustments. It canceled the discipline of water conservancy engineering in December 2022, and set Hydrology and Water Resources under the discipline of Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering in September 2023. Over 30-year development, the discipline of “Hydrology and Water Resources” has established itself in Northeast China, features “a combination of surface water and groundwater, equal priority over water resources and water environment”, meets the major needs of the coordinated development, utilization and protection of water resources, water environment and water ecology in the new era, and cultivates high-level, compound, and patriotic talents with international vision, innovative spirit, and interdisciplinary background in the field of water conservancy and environment. To date, more than 100 doctoral and postgraduate students have graduated from this program, most of whom work in junior colleges and universities, and scientific research institutes for teaching and scientific research.
