The previous research of groundwater resources has focused on the underground space less than 1000 meters. Combined with the national strategic plan of deeper underground research, our research expanded from the traditional shallow space to the deep underground.
Prof. Xu Tianfu developed the simulation software TOUGHREACT independently, which is one of the world’s most commonly used in reaction solute transport (Steefel et al., 2015; Gaus et al., 2008). It has been widely used in CO2 geological storage, geothermal energy development, groundwater quality evolution, and the migration and transformation of pollutants, etc. Scholars have published more than 400 papers by using TOUGHREACT as their simulation tool or redevelopment on it (according to Science Direct). Prof. Xu Tianfu was selected as one of the Elsevier Chinese Most Cited Researchers from 2015 to 2019.
The multi-field coupling mechanism and simulation results of underground fluid movement under complex conditions have been successfully applied to hydrate test production and hot dry rock hydrothermal reservoir construction.
1. Marine Hydrate
l Served the first sea area (south china sea) hydrate test mining project in China;
l Developed water-gas-sand migration module and realized the prediction of water and gas productivity and sand production.
2. Terrestrial Hydrate
l Successfully applied to the hydrate trial mining project in the permafrost area of Qilian Mountain
l Developed the key technology of land hydrate ‘cold drilling and thermal recovery’;
l Won 1second prize of National Technological Invention.
3. Hydrothermal Reservoir Formation in Dry Hot Rock
l The first 863 projects in dry and hot rock field in the 12th Five-Year Plan;
l The key scientific issue of energy acquisition and utilization of dry hot rock in the 13thFive-Year Plan;
l Developed China’s first simulation system of large-scale dry hot rock hydraulic fracturing experiment independently;
l Developed the theory of artificial crack propagation;
l Developed the technology and equipment in hot dry rock reservoir monitoring;
l Applied to China’s first dry hot rock development demonstration project (Qinghai Gonghe);
l Won 2 first prizes of provincial and ministerial award.
